Individual Assessment of Surgical Oncological Treatment
Cancer is one of the most common problems in our companion animals. Every animal is treated with compassionate care while the veterinary team provides an individualized approach to cancer management tailored to your pet’s needs.
Surgical oncology is a specialty that focuses on management of cancer using surgery. Its main goal is to find harmful tumours in the pets body and remove them.
The individual treatment plan for each cancer patient can vary. Your veterinarian will review records and perform a physical examination. Further testing may be recommended such as CT scan, MRI, ultrasound. Biopsies are likely required to aid in definitive diagnosis.
Once a diagnosis has been made, treatment and surgical options will be discussed. Imaging is crucial for surgical planning, hence a veterinarian is likely to require advanced imaging such as CT or MRI images.
There are a couple of different types of surgeries
- This procedure happens when a tumour is located in just one place and a surgeon is able to remove it all. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be required before or after.
- This is performed when it is too dangerous to remove the whole tumour. The surgeon elects to remove as much of it as they can and treat the remaining cells with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
